To Transplant and Beyond was established to give hope, encouragement and support to transplant patients, their families, friends and carers during a very traumatic time in their lives. It conveys the positive side of transplantation, by showing what can be achieved and by encouraging as many people as possible to join the donor register, so that many more lives can be saved.

The Charity was formed in August 2000 by Chairman, John Fisher, shortly after his heart transplant. The Charity is now registered, is a totally non-profit making and all the committee members give up their time for free. They promote the organ donor register and encourage people to think and talk about organ transplantation, in the hope that they will join the organ donor register. Fact:- over 400 people in the UK each year die due to the lack of organs available for transplantation.

After his heart transplant in July 2000, John Fisher decided to keep his new heart strong and healthy out of respect to the man who had the foresight to join the donor register and who had given John life after his own tragic and untimely death in a car accident. John decided he would run a marathon, a feat for anyone, let alone a man who had undergone a major operation like this. John had hardly run before, but within months of his operation he was taking his first steps in his newly acquired running shoes!

Since that time, John has achieved so much. Through competing in gruelling endurance events throughout each year, John raises tremendous awareness of how important it is for us all to join the donor register, persuading thousands each year to do so. He has completed The London Triathlon three times, run the London Marathon seven times, and completed eight other marathons around the world, including the 35 mile ultra marathon in South Africa this year! Through his charity, he also helps other heart transplant recipients and their families through the fear and uncertainty of transplantation and to be a walking (and running, swimming and cycling!) example of how life can be lived to the full after this life-changing operation.

John Fisher met the founder of CherryActive, John Carey, after John (Fisher) had starting taking CherryActive Concentrate to help relieve his aching muscles after tiring training sessions for the New York marathon. John Fisher had such tremendous results, he contacted CherryActive, based only four miles from his home. The two Johns have grown to be close friends and John Carey decided CherryActive would sponsor the charity in this year’s London Triathlon, as well as taking part himself. John Carey says “I think John is an amazing man and I am really happy to support his work in this way.”
