Tell us about yourself:

I have always loved sport from an early age, I played rugby then started basketball at the age of 15. I received a scholarship to play semi-pro in the USA.  The strength & conditioning program I went through as part of the training really opened up my eyes to how fitness can change lives at all levels, this inspired me to one day have my own gym. Twenty two years later and I have opened up my own functional fitness facility.

Tell us about the sport you compete in?

I have been competing in CrossFit as a masters athlete (40-44 cat) for three years and doing CrossFit for about 5 years. It’s a great sport and is growing every year and has so many elements that one must be good at in order to compete.

How did you become involved in it?

I needed a place to train when my semi-pro basketball career was over. Going to the gym just to train was not enough and I really missed the competitive edge that I got from playing basketball out in the USA.  I found CrossFit and was hooked after the first session

What does an average training week consist of?

My training week consists of 13 sessions and looks like this: -

  • 2 sessions are Olympic lifting 80%.
  • 5 sessions are based around strength & conditioning 80%.
  • 1 session is active recovery and mobility 30-40%.
  • 2 session are skill based sessions 60-70%.
  • 3 sessions are out and out conditioning 80%.

As I’m getting older my outlook has changed where the focus is more on injury prevention, mobility and conditioning rather than developing strength. If I need to drop a session then I will in order to stay fresh for the next session or any upcoming competitions.

How does the Active Edge product range help you during training and competition?

I use the BeetActive and CherryActive product ranges mainly. BeetActive provides me with a rich source of dietary nitrates, these are key to enabling me to work at higher intensities for longer during training and competition. I use CherryActive after my sessions as it helps me to recover faster with less muscle soreness.

Highlight of career?

  • Winning the Lowlands Throwdown back to back 2016, 2017
  • Wining the French Throwdown 2017
  • Winning the Cyprus Throwdown three years in a row 2015,2016,2017

Who are your hero’s?
I don’t really have any hero's, I just want to be the best person I can be for myself and my family. No point looking up to someone else when you need to be able to look up to yourself to become better. Look in the mirror and make the person looking back at you a better person in everything they do not just CrossFit.

What are your future goals?
To compete at the CrossFit Games in 2020

How do you relax away from your sport?
I like to spend time with my family and running my gym, both can be stressful but a lot of fun.
