Insomnia
Insomnia, or sleeplessness, is a sleep disorder in which there is an inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep as long as desired or experience poor sleep quality, where stage 3 (or delta) sleep, which has restorative properties, is not reached. Montmorency cherries are one of the few known food sources of melatonin, a natural compound produced in the brain’s pineal gland, controls the body’s natural sleep cycles and circadian rhythms.
Melatonin for the prevention of jet lag.
Herxheimer A, Pertrie KJ (2002) Melatonin for the prevention of jet lag. Cochrane Database Syst Revt.9:11-24. Abstract Background: Jet-lag commonly affects air travellers who cross several time zones. It results from the body's internal rhythms being out of step with the day-night cycle at the destination. Melatonin is a pineal hormone that plays a central part in regulating bodily rhythms and has been used as a drug to re-align them with the outside world. Objectives: To ass

The role of melatonin and circadian phase in age-related sleep-maintenance insomnia: assessment in a clinical trial of melatonin replacement.
Hughes RJ, Sack RL, Lewy AJ (1998) The role of melatonin and circadian phase in age-related sleep-maintenance insomnia: assessment in a clinical trial of melatonin replacement. Sleep 21(1):52–66. Abstract The present investigation used a placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover design to assess the sleep-promoting effect of three melatonin replacement delivery strategies in a group of patients with age-related sleep-maintenance insomnia. Subjects alternated between treatme

Eur J Nutr.2012 Dec;51(8):909-16 Abstract Background: Tart Montmorency cherries have been reported to contain high levels of phytochemicals including melatonin, a molecule critical in regulating the sleep-wake cycle in humans. Purpose: The aim of our investigation was to ascertain whether ingestion of a tart cherry juice

Detection and quantification of the antioxidant melatonin in Montmorency and Balaton tart cherries (Prunus cerasus).
Burkhardt S, Tan DX, Manchester LC,Hardeland R, Reiter RJ. Detection and quantification of the antioxidant melatoninin Montmorency and Balaton tart cherries (Prunuscerasus). Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. 2001;49:4898-4902. Abstract The antioxidant melatonin was recently identified in a variety of edible plants and seeds in high concentrations. In plants, as in animals, melatonin is believed to function as a free radical scavenger and possibly in photoperiodism.
